What exactly is this?
A non-steroidal cream built on 2% coal tar and 3% salicylic acid, for thick, flaky, itchy patches. Coal tar works on the process that produces the scale rather than only softening what is already there, and salicylic acid breaks down the scale that has already formed so it lifts away.
I have tried everything. Why would this be different?
Most treatments work on the surface. Steroids hold the redness down. Scrubs and acids lift scale off. Neither changes what is producing it, which is why it returns as soon as you stop. Coal tar works on that process instead.
How soon will I notice a difference?
The itch usually settles first, often within the first week. Visible change in the scale normally takes two to four weeks. Thicker areas like knees and elbows are always slowest. Flaking often increases for the first day or two — that is loosened scale coming away, not the cream making things worse.
Using it
Will it sting?
Some people feel a brief sting or warmth for the first 20 to 30 seconds, especially on cracked skin. It settles quickly. Do not apply to open, bleeding or weeping skin. If you are nervous, patch test a small area for 24 hours first.
Does it smell?
Yes. Coal tar smells like coal tar and we are not going to pretend otherwise. It fades once absorbed or rinsed, and applying at night handles most of it.
Does it stain?
It can — sheets, towels and light-coloured clothing. Use darker or older fabric while you are treating.
Do I need to stay out of the sun?
Coal tar makes skin more sensitive to sunlight. Keep treated areas covered or out of direct sun, and do not combine it with UV or light therapy unless your doctor has told you to.
Can I use it alongside a prescription?
It is not a steroid and does not replace anything you have been prescribed. Tell your doctor you are using it.
How long does one jar last?
Three to four weeks of daily use, depending on how much skin you are treating. Larger areas, closer to two weeks.
